What is an ASN, and do you need one?
A plain-English guide to Autonomous System Numbers — what they are, who needs one, and how to get started.
An Autonomous System Number (ASN) is a globally unique identifier for a network that sets its own routing policy on the internet. If you run your own IP space and want to control how traffic reaches you, an ASN is the foundation.
Who needs an ASN?
You likely want an ASN if you multi-home (connect to more than one provider), announce your own IP prefixes with BGP, or peer directly at internet exchanges. Enterprises, hosting providers, and content networks are the most common holders.
What you get with Beriffa
- An ASN registered on your behalf through our accredited RIPE-region partner (LIR).
- A free IPv6 PA /44 allocation if you need address space.
- Guidance on BGP, RPKI, and IRR so your routes are valid and secure.
